Build strong bones to prevent osteoporosis

MISSISSIPPI STATE -- A glass of milk may not look like preventive medicine, but daily calcium intake can build strong bones that are less likely to break.

“Osteoporosis is a loss of bone density to the point where fractures occur earlier and more easily. While more prevalent in women, men can also have osteoporosis,” said Diane Tidwell, associate professor in Mississippi State University’s Department of Food Science, Nutrition and Health Promotion.

If losing weight is at the top of your New Year’s resolutions list, consider using technology to make it easier. Before beginning any new diet, consult with your medical professional or nutritionist.

According to a Mississippi State University Extension Service publication, a good weight-loss diet includes fewer calories than you normally eat, foods that appeal to you, food that is available locally, a variety of foods from the various food groups, your favorite foods on occasion, and foods that you can afford.

Eat for the health of it with MyPlate

MISSISSIPPI STATE – The U.S. Department of Agriculture introduced a new, user-friendly icon designed to make healthy eating easier.

MyPlate, the new graphic, depicts a round plate divided into four colored sections, labeled fruits, vegetables, grains and protein. A circle, labeled dairy, represents a glass of milk. The icon is part of the education campaign for the latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Mississippi is prone to seasonal flooding and the American Red Cross urges residents to take steps now to stay safe when floods threaten.

“By preparing together for floods, we can make our families safer and our communities stronger,” said Sandra Hodge, CEO of the American Red Cross of Mississippi. “We can help you and your family create a flood preparedness plan now, as our communities are being threatened by excessive rainfall.”  

Study shows area residents living longer

According to The Daily Leader, a recent study shows a decline in life expectancy for many Mississippi counties, but the numbers for Lincoln County and the surrounding area are more positive.
